Back to the top of the page On Saturday 15th September 2007 the Chief Guide, Mrs Liz Burnley, visited the new Girlguiding Centre in Lydiate. The delayed visit is a great honour for the girls and Guiders. Mrs Burnley was welcomed by two Senior Section girls and was then introduced to Mrs Sue Cadman, on her first day as County Commissioner for Sefton, Mrs Sue Ebo Division Commissioner for Maghull and Mrs Jane Dunn District Commissioner for Oakhill, before meeting Mr George Tate, who was instrumental in establishing a permanent centre for Guiding in Lydiate over 40 years ago. Now 89 George and his wife Connie, made the nostalgic trip from Shropshire for the occasion, and were impressed with the work of the Guiders both in the replacement of the original Headquarters and with the opportunities offered to the girls and young women of the area through Girlguiding. Barbara Edwards, a Guide in Lydiate in the 1930’s was also introduced. The Chief Guide heard from Mr John Kelly, the Chairman of the Parents supporters group, how the new Headquarters had been completed and the difference it had made to the Units since being handed over in January. As the Chief Guide entered the main body of the hall all the girls cheered and let off party poppers in welcome – quite a surprise to Mrs Burnley, who told the girls how impressed she was with the building, which one Rainbow told her was new. Mrs Burnley chatted to all the Guiders and girls, who were taking part in activities on environmental awareness, before joining them in afternoon tea.
This was a very happy occasion for everyone and the Chief Guide experienced a very loud farewell from the girls at the end of her visit – Mrs Burnley was presented with a gift of a Business Card holder, as a thank you for giving her time to visit the Centre.
Southport Guide, Kirsty Flynn, has won the national competition to go backstage at the Big Gig in Manchester on Saturday October 13th. Of course all her friends at St James Guides are thrilled and Kirsty is overwhelmed! Back to the top of the page A number of leaders from Sefton are working hard in their areas at the World Scout Jamboree and hope that you have been able to join in by seeing the reports from the television. Jayne Hussey and Sue Cadman are involved in the English Tea House which is on the Plaza and in full view of the magnificent Hylands House. The Tea House which has been sponsored by Williamsons Teas and Homebase, who have provided the garden, is extremely popular with participants and visitors alike offering cream teas, specialist cakes, Jamboree blend tea and a chocolate fountain. Open from 9.30 am to 10pm the Tea House is doing a roaring trade. Alison Shirt is heading up the Trash Zone being visited by 2,000 young people twice a day for the duration of the Jamboree. They are offering Knowledge, Challenge, Music and Art zones in which the participants are having a great deal of fun using all recyclable objects. Thank you to everyone who have saved their bottle tops, CD's etc they have been put to excellent use. It is good to know that the nucleus of this Zone stems from Maghull Rangers with Helen Bradley and Laura Pye taking major rolls and great that it is the only all Guider led Zone in the programme.
There are a number of others here from Sefton and Merseyside Scouts taking part in this unique event, which so far - and we are only half way through the Jamboree - has attracted well over 80,000 including participants, providers and visitors. The Chief Guide has visited and we look forward to the visit of the Region Chief Commissioner, Wendy Graham and our County Commissioner Carolyn Rankine on Saturday.

The new five year service awards were presented to forty Guiders by our County Commissioner, Carolyn Rankine, at a special ceremony on Saturday, 29 January 2005 at Deyes Lane High School, Maghull. In her address, Carolyn paid tribute to the recipients of the award, totaling 120 in the County, saying that they were all stars in their own fermament, giving inspiration to the young women in their units, " The shy quiet Brownie or Guide" she said "Can blossom into a confident young woman with your care and encouragement." Carolyn went on to encourage Guiders to take on different roles whenever the opportunity arose, this was echoed by Julie Gudgeon, County Press and PR Adviser, who received her 30 year service award. Guides from Sefton walked across Morecambe bay from Arnside to Grange over Sands as part of their Baden Powell Challenge Adventure. The girls also planned the weekend, finding their own way to the youth hostel at Arnside, shopped for and cooked their own meal. Pictured with them is the Guide co-ordinator for the County, Sue Tyldesley and the Division Commissioner for Ormskirk and Skelmersdale, Jeanette Rothwell, who both joined the girls for their trek across Morecambe Bay. Sefton's efforts for Walks for the World started on 11th June when several Units held sponsored walks along the Sefton Coastal Path, or a footpath in their area. Guides from 5th Ormskirk walked along the Leeds/Liverpool canal towpath and survived the experience! Back to the top of the page On May 1st Rainbows, Brownies and Guides from Southport Blundell crowed into two double decker coaches and set off for a long sunny day at Chester Zoo. We saw the elephants, rhinos, bats, monkeys, sealions and trigers... We ate lots of ice cream, rushed all over the climbing frames and played hide and seek in the maze. And thoroughly enjoyed ourselves!
At the elephant enclosure Back to the top of the page May 7th to 9th saw 4 young Guiders from Sefton attend a Me, Myself and I pilot training weekend at Glenbrook in Derbyshire. We all arrived on Friday and met other young Guiders from across the country. The weekend looked at self esteem and involved a variety of activities on the theme. We began the weekend my listing 5 qualities/talents that we have. Over the course of the weekend we did role plays, 'me' collages, listed achievements in a range of settings, making lists of goals we want to achieve and things we would like but might not be able to achieve and a timeline from birth to 100 looking at positive and negative events that are encountered. On Saturday evening we had 'me' time where we were free to do our own thing or watch a video. Sunday saw us jumping on balloons and reflecting on the weekend, looking at how we would liked to be praised and then writing down 10 talents/qualities we had. It was amazing how over the weekend we had all changed our own perception of ourselves and began to see other things about ourselves we had not previously acknowledged. Then it was time for lunch and then we were given a pack of the activities we had all done. After lunch we all said our goodbyes and head off home. The weekend provided us with the chance to think about ourselves and no one else which was a truely opening experience for us all. We all left knowing we had made friendships that will last after spending times reflecting on ourselves. Helen Burdett, Sarah Lake, Sally Longworth and Emma Thompson Back to the top of the page Elizabeth Rothwell Guide Guider with 5th Aughton Guides received the Unsung Hero Award from West Lancs District Council Chair, Pat Taylor, at a special ceremony following the Council Meeting on 27th January.
